While it began as a book club, Gay Writes has grown into a larger queer cultural platform. It's a home for queer stories and the people who obsess over them, challenging traditional ideas of literature and art by analyzing them through the lens of frivolous faggotry — because you can write about piss play and pop divas and simultaneously deconstruct the effects of colonialism on queer life !

We partner with eleven indies across Canada, who promo our monthly book picks to their own community of readers — Pulp Books & Café (Montreal, QC), Librairie Saint Henri Books (Montreal, QC), Queen Books (Toronto, ON), Another Story Bookshop (Toronto, ON), TYPE Books Junction (Toronto, ON), Take Cover Books (Peterborough, ON), Magpie Books (Edmonton, AB), Shelf Life Books (Calgary, AB), Mosaic Books (Kelowna, BC), King’s Co-Op Bookstore (Halifax, NS) and Cross & Crows Books (Vancouver, BC).

We also host local events in Montreal, including our regular film screening series, Reel Gay.

In a time of political backlash and cultural instability, gathering as a community to think, argue, and laugh together feels more vital than ever. Gay Writes exists to amplify the voices of queer authors / artists, and to build the spaces where their work can be celebrated.
